SafeRide America Program 2008
Sponsored Location
The SafeRide America program is a non-profit public service, to be used as a tool to get impaired individuals and
their cars safely home for the about the same or less than a taxi. The SafeRide America program provides you and
your customer's access to professional teams of two drivers. One SafeRide driver will drive the impaired patron
and their car for them while the other SafeRide driver follows behind in the "chase car".
SafeRide Service is available "on-call" 8 PM-4AM 7 days a week or 24 hours a day by advance reservation.
Service can be initiated by you, the server or by the person needing service by calling 404-888-0887.
When calling for SafeRide Service on behalf of a customer, you will need to have 4 pieces of information ready
when you call:
1. The name of the person we are picking up
2. What part of town we are taking them to i.e. Marietta, Buckhead, Duluth, etc.
3. Is their car an automatic or manual (stick shift) transmission?
4. If possible, get the person's cell phone number. It makes things much easier.
If the customer leaves before we get there make sure you call and let us know. This protects you and the bar from
Dram Shop law liability.
Ga Code 51-1-40 states, "A person who knowingly sells, furnishes, or serves alcoholic beverages to a person who is
in a state of noticeable intoxication, knowing that such person will soon be driving a motor vehicle, may become
liable for injury or damage caused by or resulting from the intoxication of such minor or person when the sale,
furnishing or serving is the proximate cause of such injury or damage."
How much does SafeRide Service cost the end-user?
There are two different rates for SafeRide Service. There is one rate for Project 21 members and one rate for non-
members. As a Sponsoring Location, the cost of SafeRide Service for non-members, from your location is $15.00
for the initial pick-up plus $2 per mile. A ten-mile trip would be only $35.00 plus tip to the driver. The total for a
taxi roundtrip is $40 or more.
Individuals that are Project 21 members (Members pay their age in dollars as an annual fee) pay only $10 for the
initial pick-up plus $2.00 per mile from your location. A ten-mile trip for a SafeRide America member from your
location would be only $30.00 plus tip to the driver.
Non-members picked up from non-sponsors pay a $20 pick-up fee and $2.00 per mile.
Is SafeRide Service available for free?
Part of our goal is to eliminate money as an excuse to drive impaired. SafeRide Service is available for free or "pay
us later" for emergencies only or when a lack of money is an issue. Only a server or other staff member from a
sponsoring location can initiate free or pay-us-later SafeRide Service. This free community supported public
service should only be used with discretion as a problem solving tool for you and other staff. Abuse of the free
service by people that just do not want to pay will not be tolerated. Free SafeRide Service is available on an "on-
call" basis only, 7 nights a week.
As a social enterprise, $1 from each SafeRide given goes to help support SafeFund, an assistance fund for children
that have been orphaned or injured by impaired driving crashes. No private individual or corporation benefits from
the proceeds collected from the SafeRide America program. Support this important life-saving program by referring
customers to us. SafeRide America is operated by the National Council for the Prevention of Impaired Driving a
501(c) 3 nonprofit organization dedicated to pro-actively preventing impaired driving.
SafeRide Service FAQ:
Q: How is it possible for SafeRide to take people and their cars for less than a taxi can take them (without their car)?
A: As a non-profit social enterprise, SafeRide America enjoys numerous operational benefits that include:
1. Ride costs are subsidized by annual bar sponsorship fees and Project 21 membership fees
2. Utilizing volunteers, on occasion, to drive the Chase Car reduces our labor costs
3. The nonprofit receives tax benefits not available to for-profit corporations
4. No need for expensive commercial carrier insurance (as no one rides in our vehicles)
Q: Is there a limit on how far you will take someone?
A: Free SafeRide Service is limited to 20 miles with no additional stops allowed. When someone is paying for SafeRide
Service there is not a restriction on distance.
Q: What forms of payment are acceptable?
A: We take cash, Visa, MasterCard, American Express, debit cards.
Q: Can I make a FIRM-reservation or FLEX reservation on behalf of a patron?
A: Yes. You can, or they can call directly and make the reservation themselves.
Q: Can I use the service if I am just too tired to drive home after my shift?
A: Yes you can, SafeRide Service is meant to proactively prevent all types of impaired driving, including lack of sleep.
Q: What types of drivers does SafeRide America use?
A: All of our drivers are paid employees of SafeRide America. All drivers must pass a felony background check and
have 3 points or less on their current MVR. All drivers must pass pre-employment and random drug screens.
Q: How does a person become a Project 21 member?
A: To become a member it costs only your age in dollars per year. As a member you get the following benefits:
· Discounted rates on SafeRide Service (described above), SafeParty and SafeChauffeur
· Your home address qualified as a sponsored pick-up location
· A free SafeRide home on your Birthday
· Invitations to exclusive SafeRide America events
Q: What is a CYA (Cover Your Assets) call?
A: When you have a customer that is visibly impaired and refuses your attempt to stop them from driving, you should
immediately place a CYA call to SRA and tell the dispatcher you calling in a "refusal of service". Be prepared to give the
dispatcher as much descriptive information as possible about the customer refusing service. Possible descriptions could
be what they are wearing, their name off of a credit card, a description of the car they are driving, their tag number, etc.
The dispatcher will note the time, your name and which bar you are calling from and all descriptive information
provided. This information is stored for your protection.
Q: How many people are allowed to ride in the SafeRide chase car?
A: None. We never allow anyone to ride in our vehicle. This keeps us from being classified as a "Vehicle for Hire",
therefore, our insurance costs are reduced making it possible to charge low fees. There must be enough seat-belted
seating in the patrons car for all passengers. No one can ride with us. We are not a taxicab service.
Q: Can you tell me more about SafeRide America and the National Council for the Prevention of Impaired Driving?

the winner of the TBS Pathfinder Award for Public Safety and the Atlanta Braves/Office Depot Community Leader
Award. We are official partners with the Georgia State Patrol and the proud recipients of a proclamation from the Atlanta
